Jean-Pierre Eckmann

Jean -Pierre Eckmann ( born January 27, 1944) is a Swiss mathematical physicist and mathematician who deals with chaos theory.

Jean -Pierre Eckmann is the son of the mathematician Beno Eckmann. He studied at the ETH Zurich, where in 1967 his Diploma in physics at Klaus Hepp acquired ( renormalization of the Yukawa theory ), and was founded in 1970 by Marcel Guenin his doctorate at the University of Geneva ( Hamiltonians of persistent interactions ), where he is also professor.

Eckmann was the first with his doctoral Pierre Collet, Peter Wittwer and Hans Koch and Oscar Lanford a rigorous treatment of the universality of the dealt with by Mitchell Feigenbaum period -doubling bifurcations of a large class of dynamic systems of self-maps on the unit interval and in higher dimensions .. you turned while the well-known from quantum field theory and statistical mechanics method of the renormalization group and partly computer support in the evidence. Much has been quoted his review article with David Ruelle 1985, who joined the much studied in chaos theory Strange attractors with the classical mathematical ergodic theory

He also dealt with statistical mechanics (such as spin glasses, neural networks), mathematical quantum field theory, hydrodynamics, random matrices and other areas of mathematical physics and partial differential equations.

He was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians, Berkeley, 1986 ( The mechanism of Feigenbaum Universality ) and in 2002 in Beijing (Non- equilibrium steady states ).

Since 2001 he is member of the Academia Europaea and the Göttingen Academy of Sciences ( 1995). He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
