Jean-Pierre Richard

Jean -Pierre Richard ( born July 15, 1922 in Marseille ) is a French literary critic and writer.

Life

Jean -Pierre Richard attended the École Normale Supérieure in 1941. He graduated in 1945 from the Agrégation de lettres and gained a doctor's degree in 1962. He taught French literature at various universities in Scotland, including Edinburgh (1946-1948), London (1949-1958), at the Institut Français de Madrid and in Vincennes ( 1968-1978 ). In 1978 he was elected professor at the Sorbonne in Paris.

Research

Richard is considered to be representative of the " critique thématique ". His research is influenced by Gaston Bachelard and Georges Poulet, with whom he has worked in Edinburgh. Richard has, as articulated in a literary work, interested in the specific sensory perception of the world. The title of his first major study, " Littérature et Sensation" (1954 ), this holds programmatically. In particular, the 19th and 20th century authors - Stendhal, Gustave Flaubert, Eugène Fromentin, Stéphane Mallarmé, Marcel Proust - he has read with his own peculiar proximity of text and accuracy in this light. Richard was the so-called Geneva School of literary criticism close ( Marcel Raymond, Albert Beguin, Jean Starobinski, Jean Rousset, Georges Poulet ).
