Jean Rousset

Jean Rousset ( born February 20, 1910 in Geneva, † 14 September 2002 in Geneva ) was a Swiss linguist and literary theorist.

Life and work

Rousset studied humanities ( and law ) at the University of Geneva. His teachers were Albert Thibaudet and Marcel Raymond. Rousset was 1938-1943 French lecturer at the Universities of Halle and Munich, from 1949 assistant at the University of Geneva. He received his PhD in 1953 on La Littérature de l' âge baroque en France. Circé et le paon (Paris 1953 Spanish Barcelona 1972 Italian Bologna 1985) and was from 1953 to 1976 as a colleague of Marcel Raymond and Jean Starobinski professor of French literature at the University of Geneva.

Rousset was a member of the Académie royale de langue et de littérature françaises de Belgique and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome. He was honorary doctorates from the universities of Lausanne, Cluj -Napoca, Paris ( Sorbonne ), Venice and Trento.
