Jean Ranc

Jean Ranc (* January 28, 1674 in Montpellier, † July 1, 1735 in Madrid) was a French painter of the Baroque. The mostly known for his portraits of artists worked from 1723 as court painter in Spain.

Life

Origin and first year in Paris

Jean Ranc came in 1674 as the son of the painter Antoine Ranc Montpellier in southern France to the world. The more regionally known as an artist 's father had a collection of European paintings and held a workshop with numerous students, which from 1671 later became renowned painter Hyacinthe Rigaud belonged. Jean Ranc began his training also in the studio of his father, before he went to Paris in 1696. Here he studied with Hyacinthe Rigaud and stayed later than employees with him. A niece Rigaud, Rigaud Marguerite Elisabeth, married Ranc on 13 June 1715.

In addition to his training in the workshop Rigaud Ranc studied from December 30, 1700 at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture. With its portrait of Nicolas van Plattenberg ( Palace of Versailles ) as a master work, the Academy took him on 28 July 1703 as a member. In the following years he worked successfully as a portrait of the Parisian aristocracy and taught from 1707 painting at the Académie royale. His style of these years orienting himself closely to his teacher Rigaud and the images of Jean -Marc Nattier. So recalls his portrait of Louis XV. at the age of 9 years strong resemblance to the portrait of Louis XV. at the age of 5 years, his teacher Rigaud (both also include Palace of Versailles ). For unsigned works of both artists, there were repeated uncertainties in the write-up.

Ranc as court painter in Madrid

With the accession to the throne of the Bourbons in Spain by Philip V, grandson of the French King Louis XIV, the desire of the Spanish court was to undertake a leading French painter. Once respected painters such as Jean François de Troy, Nicolas de Largillière and Rigaud showed no interest in this property, the French minister, and Cardinal Guillaume Dubois mediated on the advice of Rigaud Jean Ranc to the Spanish court.

1723 Ranc went with his wife and now children born Antoine Jean -Baptiste, Hyacinthe, Marguerite Elizabeth, Claude and Hyacinthe -Joseph to Madrid. Two other children of the painter, Jean- Baptiste and Antonia came later in the Spanish capital to the world. He remained until his death in Madrid, only interrupted by a stay in Lisbon the years 1729-1730.

Among the earliest works of his time in Madrid is one of the portrait of Charles III. of Spain as a child. His father, Philip V was inspired by Rancs paintings and pulled him in future Spanish painter before, he also appointed him court painter. So numerous portraits of the royal family, which houses an equestrian portrait of King Philip V. is, written according to models of Peter Paul Rubens and Diego Velázquez emerged.

In addition to these portraits Ranc created some decorations for the royal residence Real Alcázar de Madrid, in which there was also the workshop of the artist. Christmas 1734 broke into the palace of a fire and destroyed the building completely. Among this destroyed many works of art were also many works of Jean Ranc. A few months later, on July 1, 1735, Ranc died in Madrid.
