The city of Jellico is situated amidst the Cumberland Mountains in the Elk Valley Greek directly on the border with Kentucky. The name comes from Jellico Angelica (Eng. First, Jellico was founded in 1878 as Smithsburg. After 1880, a high-quality coal was discovered in the mountains around Jellico. With the connection to the railway network in 1883 numerous mines emerged in the area and the renaming of the city. End of the 19th century to the early 20th century included the mines of Jellico among the most productive in the United States. 1906 blew up a train that mitführte a loaded wagon with dynamite and destroyed parts of the city. The city recovered quickly from this disaster incident and most of the old buildings of the city in Jellico Commercial Historic District date from this period.
