Jendouba

Jendouba (Arabic جندوبة Ǧandūba, DMG Dschandūba ), until 1966 Souk El Arba (Arabic سوق الأربعاء ), is a city in northwestern Tunisia. It is located about 150 kilometers west of Tunis and 50 kilometers from the Algerian border and has around 45,000 inhabitants. The city is located in one of the most fertile regions of Tunisia, the valley Medjerda, and is the capital of the eponymous province Jendouba.

History

The core of the city began before the establishment of the French protectorate end of the 19th century spread around a small station. It developed initially north of the tracks and spread gradually from in the south. The old name, Souk El Arba, comes from the Wednesday market held in the city.

In the region, but will also find numerous ancient ruins like the lying nearby excavation Bulla Regia, about eight kilometers northwest of the city.

Culture and infrastructure

There is a small museum mainly from excavations around issues at the archaeological site of Bulla Regia.

The most important events in Jendouba are the Festival de Bulla Riga and the Festival de la Medina de Jendouba.

In the city the Université de Jendouba and three secondary schools are: The Lycée Nouvel Ère, the Lycée Khémaïs Elhajri and the Lycée 9 avril.

Economy

The region around Jendouba lives mainly from agriculture. The industry is, inter alia, by a sugar factory employers in the region.

Sports

Jendouba houses the sports club Jendouba Sports, which was founded in 1922 and in the second Tunisian League plays (as of season 2011/ 2012). The club plays in the Stadium Municipal de Jendouba.
