Jens Zetlitz

Jens Zetlitz (* January 26, 1761 in Stavanger, Rogaland, † January 14, 1821 in Kviteseid, Telemark) was a Norwegian priest, poet, and a representative of the Enlightenment.

Family

His parents were the regimental surgeon Zikmund Zetlitz (1725-1762) and his wife Mette Christine Magnus ( 1735-1772 ). In his first marriage he married on September 10, 1791 in Lye Maren Elisabeth ( "Elisa" ) Bull (11 September 1761-20. January 1801 ), daughter of Provost Jens Bull ( 1718-1804 ) and his wife Christine Axeliane Smith (1737 -1762 ). Life

Jens Zetlitz grew up in Stavanger until he came to Bergen in the cathedral school. As both his father and then his stepfather had died, the priest and later bishop Johan Nordahl Brun his adopted who offered him a food court for poor students. In 1789 he passed his state examination and published his first book of poems Poesier. This collection of poems is a great breadth of his poetic skills. Literary work

His best lyrics belong to this period 1790 to 1801. His " Sange for the norske Bonde Stand " ( song for the Norwegian peasantry ) of 1795 became very popular.
