Jeremiah D. M. Ford
Jeremiah Denis Matthias Ford ( born July 2, 1873 in Cambridge (Massachusetts ), † November 13, 1958 in Cambridge ( Massachusetts)) was an American linguist, Hispanist and Lusitanist.
Life and work
Ford was educated at Harvard, Cork and London. He received his Ph.D. in 1897 from Harvard University with the work of The Old Spanish Sibilants (Harvard 1900, Ann Arbor, 1979). From 1897 to 1898 he lived in Italy and in Paris. His career at Harvard University, was as follows: From 1895 he was instructor of French and Italian, from 1898 for French and Spanish, from 1899 for Romance languages ( simultaneously at Radcliffe College). From 1902 he was an associate professor, 1907-1943 Smith Professor of Roman Languages .
Ford was a corresponding member of the Academies in Madrid and Barcelona and president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences ( 1931-1933 ).
