Jericho (Oxford)

Jericho is a district of Oxford. Jericho is bounded on the west by the Oxford Canal, south from the city center, in the east of the Woodstock Road and north of Summertown district. The main road runs through the Walton Street Jericho in north-south direction.

History

Jericho is first mentioned in 1650, when the ' Jericho Tavern ' was built. The term Jericho was then used for accommodation on the edge, where travelers could rest when the city gates were closed.

1790 the Oxford Canal was completed, immediately adjacent to Jericho. He joined Oxford with Coventry and allowed the rapid and efficient transport of coal. In the following years the population increased in Oxford during the industrialization rapidly. Jericho hosted mainly workers from the surrounding farms and the university.

1812 William Carter founded an iron foundry, which was renamed by his successor Charles Grafton in Eagle Iron Works. William Lucy took over the company in 1860 under the name of Lucy's Ironworks and supplied the local market, including with agricultural machinery and lampposts. In early 2006, had the old factory buildings an extensive construction project along the Oxford Canal soft and were completely demolished.

1826 pulled the Oxford University Press from Broad Street in the Walton Street Jericho, where she still maintains its main building today. Thus, two of the largest employers were located in Jericho.

1869 was inaugurated the St. Barnabas Church, thanks to a generous donation by Thomas Combe. Combe took little influence on the design of the church, but decreed that the Church more than 1,000 believers should provide space and a modest appearance, but should have a refined interior.

About the city limits of Oxford's Jericho was also known by the Inspector Morse novel The Dead of Jericho (1981 ) by Colin Dexter.

In the last elections to the County Council ( North, Jericho and Osney, Carfax ) were given two seats in the County Division West Central Oxford. Was elected Susanna Pressel ( Labour ), Alan Edmund Armitage ( Liberal Democrats ) retained his seat.

In the constituency Jericho / Osney again won Susanna Pressel ( Labour ) with 1,793 votes ahead of Catherine Elizabeth Hilliard ( Liberal Democrat ), who received 769 votes.
