Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra

The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra of the Israel Broadcasting.

History

The orchestra goes back to a radio orchestra, which was founded in 1936 by the British Mandate government of Palestine as Kol Israel Orchestra. It gained its followers through the regular Tuesday concerts in the auditorium of the Jerusalem YMCA. In the 1970s, it changed its name in 1985 and moved into the Henry Crown Symphony Hall of the newly built cultural center of Jerusalem. The relatively small orchestra with 80 ensemble members, among them Palestinian origin is so far not a musician, subsidized by the Israeli broadcasting, the municipality of Jerusalem and the Ministry of Culture of Israel.

Repertoire

Apart from the classical repertoire, dedicated the orchestra of contemporary music, including Israeli composers. It was selected for world premieres by composers Sofia Gubaidulina, Henri Dutilleux and Alfred Schnittke. Together with members of the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Krzysztof Penderecki's Seventh was first performed in 1997 under the direction of Lorin Maazel. The JSO is within the Israeli cultural policy on international tours.
