Jesus M. Vargas

Jesus Miranda Vargas ( born March 22, 1905 in Manila, † March 25, 1994 ) was a former Filipino lieutenant general and politician.

Biography

After schooling Vargas entered the service of the Philippine Constabulary and Philippine Constabulary Academy graduated in 1929 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. ) from. In 1940 he was a graduate of the U.S. Army Field Artillery School at Fort Sill, and then took part in the Second World War and was last in 1943 aide- de-camp and Commanding Officer of the battalion of the Guard of President Manuel Quezon.

After the end of the war in 1947 was a graduate of the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, and after his return 1947-1948 administrative officer in the ground forces. After a subsequent use as Superintendent of the Reserve Officer Training Corps in Manila, he was 1949-1950 commander of the 5th Battalion of the use of the Association during the battles with the Hukbalahap.

After he was first deputy chief of staff of the armed forces, before he rose to lieutenant general and last December 30, 1953 to December 29, 1956 the Commanding General of the Armed Forces of the Philippines ( Lakas ng Pilipinas Sandatahang ) was. As such, he was at the same time 1954-1956 military advisor to the SEATO.

Subsequently, he was between 28 August 1957 and May 18, 1959 Defence Minister ( Secretary of National Defense) in the government of President Carlos P. Garcia. He was also Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the National Authority for water works and drainage.

He then moved into the private sector and was among other things, 1961-1965 President of the Philippine American Management & Financing Company and from 1962 to 1965 Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation.

Most recently he was from July 1, 1965 to September 5, 1972 Secretary General of SEATO.

Jesus Vargas has won several awards and received, among other things, the Order of Military Merit ( Taiguk ) of the Republic of Korea and the Order of the White Elephant of Thailand. In 1962, he was the Cavalier Alumni Association of the Philippine Military Academy.
