Jimmie Durham

Jimmie Durham ( born 1940 in Washington, Arkansas) is an American political activist, conceptual artist and writer.

Life

Durham - originating from the Indian people of the Cherokee - began his artistic activities in 1960 during the time of the civil rights movement. His first solo exhibition was the artist in 1965 in Austin (Texas ). From 1968 to 1973 Durham studied art at the École des Beaux -Arts in Geneva. The study he completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts. From 1973 to 1980 Durham took political office in the American Indian Movement (AIM ) and the International Indian Treaty Council ( IITC ), of which he was a co-founder in 1974. As a representative of IITC Durham worked at the United Nations and worked in that capacity in a statement for the rights of indigenous peoples. After the end of his political activities, he devoted himself in New York City again the visual arts, and in addition, he wrote essays and poems. 1987 Durham moved to Cuernavaca (Mexico). Since 1994 lives and works in Berlin and Rome Jimmie Durham.
