Jinja is a city in southeastern Uganda with 99 507 inhabitants. It is the fourth largest city of Uganda and capital of the district of Jinja. It is located near the exit of the White Nile on the shores of Lake Victoria.

History

Jinja was established in 1901 as a trading post.

Infrastructure

Jinja has a railway station of the railway line of the Uganda Railway, which connects the city to Nairobi and Mombasa on the Indian Ocean as well as the capital Kampala. The passenger traffic was discontinued in 1997, the railroad is responsible since only the freight. In addition, Jinja has a port which is used for the movement of goods across Lake Victoria. Nearby is the Owen Falls Dam, which is responsible for virtually all power in Uganda and parts of Kenya. At Jinja passes a bypass road that directs the main transport between Kenya and Kampala past the city.

Economy

It will be produced on agricultural products cotton, sugarcane, maize and peanuts in the area. The industry produces copper, metal and wood products, textiles and soap. At present, a huge water power plant is built, to provide the electricity for more than five million households ( Bujagali dam ).
