Jiří Menzel

Jiří Menzel ( born February 23, 1938 in Prague) is a Czech director and actor. He is one of the main figures of the Czechoslovak New Wave, which made ​​headlines worldwide in the 1960s for attention.

Life

Menzel was born as the son of children's author Josef Menzel. During his education at the Prague film school FAMU from 1957 to 1962 he made ​​his first short films Domy z panelu (1960) and Umřel nám pan Foerster (1962). He then worked until 1965 in the newsreel. A tour with the theater group " La Madragola " led him in 1967 by Czechoslovakia and other Eastern European countries. Menzel staged at theaters in Stockholm, Basel and Bochum.

His film debut as an actor he had in 1962 in Strop by Věra Chytilová. Menzel has since worked both as an actor and director in film and television productions. His comedy OSTRE sledované vlaky (1966 ) was awarded at the International Film Festival Mannheim -Heidelberg and was awarded an Oscar, his later film Vesničko má, středisková (1985 ) was also nominated oscar. Menzel Comedy Rozmarne léto (1968 ) was awarded to the film festival in Karlovy Vary.

For literary sources Menzel often served at his compatriot Bohumil Hrabal; as in 1969 he whose " Larks on a String " filmed, this satirical film was banned after the suppression of the Prague Spring.
