Jiří Stránský

Jiri Stransky ( born August 12, 1931 in Prague) is a Czech writer, screenwriter, playwright and translator.

Life

Stransky comes from a wealthy family with aristocratic ancestors. After graduation in 1950, he took up a position in a print shop. In 1953 he was arrested and sentenced to eight years in prison for treason by the communist regime. He went through some labor camp before he was granted amnesty in 1960. After his release, he worked as a construction worker and a gas station. During this activity, he assisted in the Barrandov film studios. In 1974, he was again sentenced to three and a half years in prison and released after 1 1/2 years. He stepped back to a job as a technician at the oil company Benzina and continued working externally in the film industry with.

After 1989 he published in the literary magazine Literární noviny, leaves ( Listy ) and the People's Daily ( Lidové noviny ). In 1990 he became full-time writer. In the same year it accepted the offer of the conductor in the foreign department de Czech Literary Fund ( Český Literární fond ) to. 1992 Stransky was elected president of the PEN Club of the Czech section. 1995 to 1998, he was appointed Chairman of the Council of the National Library ( Národní Rada Knihovny ).

Works

During his detention, he met some Catholic writers, what animated him to write some books, which dealt with the Communist regime. His work boomerang was filmed and shown at the 1998 Munich Film Festival.
