Jo Van Fleet

Jo Van Fleet ( born December 30, 1914 in Oakland, California, † June 10, 1996 in New York ) was an American actress.

Life

Jo Van Fleet was sponsored by Uta Hagen and Sanford Meisner and played her first Broadway role 1947. 1954 she was honored with a Tony Award. Elia Kazan, with whom she had also worked together in the theater, cast her in his film East of Eden on the side of James Dean as his mother. This brought her film debut in 1956, like the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In the years to Jo Van Fleet occurred only rarely in movies.
