Joachim Gasquet

Joachim Gasquet (* 1873 in Aix -en- Provence, † 1921) was a Provençal writer and art critic.

Life

Born the son of a wealthy baker Henri Gasquet, he was as a young man various literary magazines in Aix out as 1892 La Syrinx, Les Mois dorés ( 1896-98 ), Le Pays de France (1899-1902 ), and studied philosophy at the University of of Aix. Gasquet tied friendly links with writers such as Emmanuel Signoret, Marc Lafargue, Edmond Jaloux and André Gide. His father had been a school friend of Paul Cézanne; acquaintance with Cézanne after an exhibition in Aix -en- Provence in 1895 increased Gasquets enthusiasm for his homeland, Provence. Joachim Gasquet has since become a big fan of Cézanne. His father, Henri Gasquet, allowed him to accompany Cézanne whose visits to the Louvre and to help in the studio. There was a deep friendship between Gasquet and Cézanne, which was reflected in letters and conversations. In 1896, Gasquet married the later writer Marie Gasquet.

After he had been supporters of Alfred Dreyfus, he joined in 1901 a nationalist movement, on the Action Française, Charles Maurras, his friend, and he converted to Catholicism. In 1921, Gasquet died as a result of the injuries he had suffered in the First World War.

Cézanne

His recent book Cézanne in 1921 bears witness to the artist's life, about whose worldview and artistic creativity. The book was published in two volumes. The first part is entitled " Ce que je sais ou ai vu de sa vie". The author tells of the life of the artist since childhood, to paint from his travels, his kind. The second part is entitled " Ce qu'il m'a dit", which contains his conversations with the artist, written fifteen years after the death of Cézanne. Its compilation is half authentic, the other half of contrived utterances of Paul Cézanne. Even at that time possessed the traditional statements an uncertain status. What the Cézanne reception did not stop to be guided by Gasquets Book: products derived from the statements by pulling both art historical research as well as philosophical and aesthetic comments, especially in Germany, where has been available since 1930, a translated edition; and they have identified the literary appropriation, from the still Peter Handke's book The Doctrine of the Sainte- Victoire from 1980 is a later witness.
