Joan Chittister

Sister Joan D. Chittister OSB ( born April 26, 1936) is an American Benedictine nun, author, lecture travelers and peace activist.

Life and work

She is a member of a convent of Benedictine Sisters in Erie (Pennsylvania), in which they entered the age of sixteen and where she served for twelve years as prioress.

Chittister studied at the University of Notre Dame, from which she received a master's degree and a doctorate in "speech -communication theory" at the Pennsylvania State University.

In 2001 she received the Thomas Merton Award for peace and social justice.

In 2008, she met with the Dalai Lama in Seattle, held at Washington National Cathedral a speech and participated in a women's conference, which was organized by Maria Shriver, the First Lady of California. In 2007 she received the Hans Küng Award from the Association for the Rights of Catholics in the Church as well as the "Outstanding Leadership Award " of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. She has received numerous honorary doctorate degrees and other awards.

In 2006 she had with Meet the Press with Tim Russert an appearance as part of a charged podium. During the funeral of John Paul II as well as in the election of Benedict XVI. In April 2005 she was a commentator for the BBC from Rome.

Chittisters demand for women's ordination in the Roman Catholic Church and its assertion of an unequal position of women within the church have reduced their acceptance in parts of the church who want to change anything on the position of women in the Roman Catholic Church.

Works

She is the author of some forty books, including: Welcome to the Wisdom of the World, The Tent of Abraham - Stories of Hope and Peace for Jews, Christians and Muslims, In Search of Belief, Called to Question and The Friendship of Women: The Hidden tradition of the Bible. Five of them have been translated into German.

She has nine times won an award from the Catholic Press Association, recently. In June 2009 The Gift of Years

Currently, she writes a weekly Webkolumne for the National Catholic Reporter, which is called " From Where I Stand ".
