Joanny-Philippe Lagrula

Joanny -Philippe Lagrula (* 1870, † 1950) was a French astronomer.

Life

In 1901 he received his doctorate in Lyon with the dissertation Étude sur les occultations d' amas d' étoiles par la Lune avec un normal catalog of the Pleiades. The eclipse of the Pleiades by the Moon was an important event that helped to compare the actual position of the Moon with the pre-calculated for the then astronomers. Lagrula first worked at the observatory in Lyon. In 1906 he became director of the Quito Observatory in South America Ecuador for several years. He then worked until 1924 at the Nice Observatory, and then moved to the Algiers Observatory, where he worked as successor of François Gonnessiat director in 1931. His career thus followed that of Gonnessiat, who had also previously worked in Lyon, Quito and Algiers.

Honors

Joanny -Philippe Lagrula discovered on January 6, 1914 asteroid Lumiere. The asteroid Lagrula was named after him.
