João Figueiredo

João Baptista de Oliveira Figueiredo ( born January 15, 1918 in Rio de Janeiro, † December 24, 1999 ibid ) was President of Brazil from 1979 to 1985.

During the reign of his predecessor Ernesto Geisel João Figueiredo was head of the secret Serviço Nacional de Informações (SNI). After his election he held the office of President of 15 March 1979 to 15 March 1985. He led the hostage started by democratization of the country further, granted political exiles amnesty, liberalized electoral law and press censorship and reformed the party system, whereby new parties emerged.

Due to the poor economic situation of Brazil João Figueiredo became increasingly unpopular. 1983 saw the first demonstrations that demanded a return to democracy and the direct election of the president. He opposed it, but the opposition under Tancredo Neves sat down by the Brazilian congress and elected Neves 1985 his successor.
