Job of Pochayiv

Job of Pochayiv (Ukrainian Йов Почаївський job Potschajiwskyj; * 1551 in Volhynia, West Ukraine, † October 25, 1651 in Pochayiv ), whose real name is John ( Іоан, Ioan ), was a Ukrainian abbot and saint of the Orthodox Church.

Life

At the age of ten years John has such a maturity that you took him in Ugorniki in the Monastery of the Transfiguration of Christ. Two years later he received the tonsure and the name of Job. At the age of thirty years was his ordination. To him, the task of the overseer of the Monastery of the Holy Cross in Dubno was then transferred. For 20 years, he devoted himself to spread here to the letter and the task of spiritual literature as abbot. His own works were later published, " hand written book of the Venerable Job of Pochayiv " under the title.

When in 1596 by the Union of Brest exacerbated the tensions between the Catholic and the Orthodox Church, was Job, and the monastery was in tribulation, because the monastery is close to the border with the Catholic Poles. Because of the strong efforts of the Polish Catholic Mission Job wrote much in defense of the orthodox doctrine. Especially by his criticism of the Catholic practice of using unleavened bread in the liturgy he caused offense.

Among the printed and disseminated books he himself was the first complete edition of the Bible Orthodox, where he was supported by the Prince Konstanty Wasyl Ostrogski. In 1604 he came to the monastery of Pochayiv and was elected abbot there. There he became a strict ascetic. He was silent, got little words, and even the few words that came from his lips, was the prayer of Jesus. Many days and even weeks, he locked himself in his cave and lived absorbed in prayer. Some of the monks said that he saw the light of Tabor. Job introduced some reforms in the convent and sat a stricter discipline through. In 1628 he took part in the Synod of Kiev, where he spoke out against each Unionsbemühung with the Catholic Church. 1651 Job died and was canonized shortly thereafter.
