Jobst of Moravia

Jobst of Moravia (also Jost, Jodok (us) Margrave of Moravia, Czech Moravian Jost, * 1351, † January 18, 1411 in Brno ) came from the Luxembourg dynasty. He was Margrave of Moravia from 1375 and from 1388 until his death Duke of Luxembourg and Prince Elector of Brandenburg. In 1410 he was elected Roman - German king, but died shortly afterwards, so that he actually could not take up his government.

Life

Jobst was a son of Count Johann Heinrich von Tirol, Margrave of Moravia and younger brother of Emperor Charles IV, and of Margaret of Opava.

In 1375 he inherited the Margraviate of Moravia, which he, however, had to share with his brother Prokop, resulting in constant discord among the two. 1376 he confirmed the Charterhouse King Field paternal Foundation, which he promoted on his part. 1397 Jobst was invested with the Margraviate of Brandenburg, which he has since 1388 had the pledged property within the family (as well as Luxembourg itself) due to changing alliances.

1387, he helped his cousin Sigismund, the younger son of Charles IV, to the throne of Hungary. 1402 their separate ways.

After the death of King Rupert on May 18, 1410 Jobst was next to Sigismund one of the candidates to replace him. The royal election a few months later resulted in a narrow victory for Jobst three electors ( Trier, Palatine and Brandenburg ) voted on September 20 to Sigismund, the other four decided on 1 October for Jobst. He received it from the King of Bohemia Wenceslas, the older brother Sigismund, who was in turn a decade earlier deposed as king the deciding vote. His sudden death the following January - presumably he was poisoned - but then led to the fact that the election loser, Sigismund still fell to rule over the kingdom.

Jobst was married to Elizabeth of Opole, Opole, a daughter of the Duke Władysław II and his first wife Elizabeth. After Elizabeth's early death he married their aunt Agnes of Opole. Since both marriages remained childless, he was the last of Luxembourg who held the Margraviate of Moravia.

Person

Jobst was an adroit politician, makes you hungry and willing to change his goals for the opinion and political sides. The historian described him as " extremely smart, mercenary, stingy, land hungry," but also as " highly educated nobleman, book lovers, however, prefer the borrowed them as bought ".

The first way to increase his lands, offered him his cousin Sigismund, who aspired to the Hungarian crown. Jobst lent him a large amount of money, and received from him the Mark Brandenburg, first as a fief, but since 1388 until his death, with all the rights of an elector.

1389, after the death of Wenceslas of Luxembourg, he received thanks to his cousin, the German King Wenceslas IV of Bohemia, the Duchy of Luxembourg. 1394 he presented with Bohemian nobleman against Wenceslas, whom he captured on May 8, 1394, to Prague and later convicted in the Upper Austrian Castle Wildenberg.
