Joe Frank Edwards, Jr. ( born February 3, 1958 in Richmond, Virginia, USA ) is a former American astronaut.

Edwards in 1980 he received a bachelor's degree in aeronautics and aerospace engineering from the United States Naval Academy in 1994 and a master's degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Tennessee.

In the United States Navy Naval Air Edwards in 1982. In 1983, he completed several monitoring and reconnaissance flights over Lebanon. In 1984, he completed his training at the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School, 1986 to the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School.

1991 lost his plane over the Persian Gulf in nearly 10,000 m altitude, the radar system. These penetrated the cockpit of his F-14 Tomcat. Seriously injured, however, he managed with his badly damaged machine still landing on the aircraft carrier USS Eisenhower.

Astronauts activity

In December 1994, Edwards was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate.

STS -89

On January 23, 1998 Edwards began as a pilot of the space shuttle Endeavour to the space station Mir. An object of the mission was to share the on-board the Mir U.S. astronaut David Wolf against Andrew Thomas. In addition, scientific equipment and supplies were brought to me.

In June 2002, Edwards was appointed Chairman and CEO of the National Science Center in Augusta, Georgia.

Joe Edwards is married and has one child.
