Joe Shulman

Joseph "Joe" Shulman ( born September 12, 1923 in New York City; † August 2, 1957 ) was an American jazz bassist. He played with Miles Davis on Birth of the Cool.

Joe Shulman was self-taught. He first played in 1940 at Johnnie Scat Davis, 1942, with Les Brown, in the Army Air Force Band Glenn Miller 1943-1944, then in 1946 with Buddy Rich and 1947 with Claude Thornhill. Arranger at Thornhill was at this time Gil Evans. Through him, he came to the Metronome All Stars Miles Davis and was involved in the recording of the formation from 1949 to 1950, which should appear under the title Birth of the Cool later.

In addition, Shulman was with Peggy Lee and Dave Barbour on 1948 and 1950 on tour, worked with Lester Young and played together since 1951 in a trio with Barbara Carroll, whom he married in 1954. He died at age 33 of a heart attack during a short vacation.
