Johan C. Verbeke

Johan C. Verbeke ( born July 9, 1951 in Ghent) is a Belgian diplomat.

Life

Johan Verbeke studied master's degree in law and philosophy at the University of Ghent, the Université de Nancy and the Yale Law School. He joined the Foreign Service in 1981. From 1983 to 1985 he was ambassador in Beirut, 1985 in Amman and 1985-1988 ambassador in Bujumbura. 1988 to 1990 he was chargé d'affaires in Santiago de Chile. 1990 to 1992 he was spokesman for the Belgian Foreign Ministry. 1992 to 1994 he was the representative of the Belgian Government in the European Union. 1994 to 1998 he was deputy ambassador in Washington, DC 1998 to 1999 he was Deputy Head of the Political Department in the Foreign Ministry. 1999 to 2000 he was head of Europe at the Foreign Ministry. 2000 to 2002 he was office manager of the Belgian Minister for Europe. 2002 to 2004 he was Head of Office of the Foreign Minister. 2004 to 2008 he sat as representative of the Belgian Government in the UN Security Council. In 2008, he was Special Coordinator of the UN Secretary-General in Lebanon. 2008 to 2009 he was a representative of the UN Secretary General in Georgia. and headed the observer mission of the United Nations in Georgia. Since January 2010 he has been Ambassador to the Court of St James's.

Johan Verbeke is married to Catherine Dubois and has three children.
