Johan Van Hecke

Johan Jozef Marie Clara Van Hecke ( born December 2, 1954 in Ghent) is a Belgian politician for the Liberal Party Open Vlaamse en Democraten (Open VLD). From 1999 to 2009 he was a member of the European Parliament.

Life

Van Hecke studied medical sociology at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and graduated in 1978 with a master's from. He then worked until 1980 at the KULeuven as a research assistant and from 1981 to 1985 as head of the research department and lecturer at the Institute of paramedical professions ( HIPB ) Ghent.

Van Hecke was involved in the Christelijke Volkspartij (CVP ), which in 2001 Christen- Democratisch en Vlaams (CD & V) renamed itself. He was from 1983 to 1986 state chairman of the Youth League and from 1993 to 1996 General Chairman of the CVP. At the local level he was active from 1983 to 1988 as a member of the City Council of the East Flemish community Oosterzele and from 1989 to 1997 mayor of the municipality.

1985 Van Hecke was elected as an MP in the Belgian House of Representatives, where he remained until 1997. During this time, he was from 1991 to 1993 chairman of the CVP Group. 1999 Van Hecke for the liberal party VLD was elected to the European Parliament. He was a member of the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, and the Development Committee and the Delegation to the ACP -EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly. After the European elections in 2009 retired from Van Hecke from the European Parliament.
