Johann Bartsch

Johann Bartsch (* 1709 in Königsberg, † 1738 in Suriname ) was a German physician and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Bartsch ".

Life

Johan Bartsch studied at Leiden University Medical. There he met Carl Linnaeus know and supported him in the handling of his work Flora Lapponica. When Linnaeus was offered in the summer of 1737 by Hermann Boerhaave the post of physician to the Dutch East India Company in Dutch Guiana, refused Linnaeus and recommended Boerhaave instead Johann Bartsch.

Bartsch died in 1738 shortly after his arrival in Dutch Guiana, now Suriname.

Ehrentaxon

Carl Linnaeus named in his honor, the genus of the plant family Bartsia the figwort family ( Scrophulariaceae ).
