Johann Benjamin Koppe

Johann Benjamin Koppe ( born August 19, 1750 in Gdansk, † February 12, 1791 in Hannover ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

Koppe attended high school in Gdansk in 1769 and began with the study of philology and theology in Leipzig, which he continued in Göttingen in 1772. In 1774 he became professor of Greek language at the high school in Jelgava, 1775 Professor at the University of Göttingen from 1777 also university preacher, and from 1778 director of the Seminary. The focus of his lectures formed the Old and New Testament exegesis.

Most important publication was an editor of the New Testament under the title " N. T. Graec. perpetua annotatione illustratum " (1778 ), which was continued after his death by Thomas Christian Tychsen, Christoph Ammon, Johann Heinrich Henry and David Julius pot and led until the 19th century to the end. He has published several Latin programs, concerned the publication of a German translation of the English Isaiah commentary by Robert Lowth ( 1779-81 ) and was a hymnal out for use in the University Church.

1784 went Koppe as senior pastor, Oberkonsistorialrat and General Superintendent in Gotha. In 1788 he was appointed first court preacher at the Castle Church in Hanover, Consistory and general superintendent for the diocese General Hoya Diepholz, but died three years later at the age of 40 years. In the short period of his ministry in Hanover was among his tasks, the reorganization and expansion of the Hanover School Teachers' College and the cooperation in the publication of the Hanover national catechism ( " Catechism of Christian Doctrine, for use in the Protestant churches and schools of the Royal. Johann Benjamin Koppe was buried in the garden cemetery, where there is to be a listed monument today.
