Johann Daniel Schöpflin

Johann Daniel Schöpflin ( born September 6, 1694 Sulzburg; † August 7, 1771 in Strasbourg ) was a professor of history, eloquence, and constitutional law at the University of Strasbourg. He was a university teacher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

Life and work

Schöpflin was immensely popular in Europe and had a sphere of influence, which went far beyond Strasbourg. His correspondence provides a revealing documentation of the university and academic life, but also to cultural and diplomacy in the age of Enlightenment dar. His comments on contemporaries and the current events are now an important source of the cultural fabric of his time. Contacts he maintained with the scholars of the monastery of St. Blaise Academy with Martin Gerbert and Rustenus army.

In 1760 he was awarded the Order of Karl Friedrich von Baden, exploring his family history extensively.

Schöpflin belonged since 1763 to the Electoral Palatinate Academy of Sciences in Mannheim and was its first Honorary President

1770 and 1771 he was a university teacher of Goethe and intensified its interest in the history and especially the medieval poetry. Also, the Palatine historian Andreas Lamey (1726-1802) was one of his students.
