Johann Friedrich Rochlitz

Johann Friedrich Rochlitz ( born February 12, 1769 in Leipzig, † December 16, 1842 ) was a German novelist, dramatist and writer on music.

Life

Friedrich Rochlitz attended the Thomas School and studied from 1789 to 1791 in Leipzig theology and philosophy and then worked as a private tutor. In 1798 he founded the General Musical newspaper, its editor until 1818. In connection with a planned marriage with harpist Therese from the Winckel, he was awarded on September 14, 1800 by Duke Carl August of Saxe- Weimar, the title of a ducal Saxony Weimar court counselor. However, the marriage did not take place, Rochlitz married until February 23, 1810 his high school sweetheart, the widowed Henriette Winkler born Hansen ( 1770-1834 ). She was previously the wife of Leipzig merchant Daniel Winkler and brought into the marriage its precious art collection, including a painting of Rembrandt van Rijn.

Rochlitz was known and friends with numerous personalities of his time, as with Goethe, Schiller, and ETA Hoffmann. He was also friends with composers such as Louis Spohr, for to the oratorio he wrote the libretto Last Things and Carl Maria von Weber, who Rochlitz 1822 his 4th piano sonata op 70 dedicated.

During his stay in Vienna in 1822, he also made the acquaintance of Beethoven and Franz Schubert, who set to music in 1827 three poems of Rochlitz. The credibility of his extensive description of the encounter with Beethoven, who decisively shaped the Beethoven image of the 19th century, is confirmed by an unpublished diary of Rochlitz.

Rochlitz wrote numerous articles for the general musical newspaper and the first biography of the composer and violinist Ernst Friedrich Fesca ( 1789-1826 ). The most important work of Rochlitz is his autobiographical story Days of danger on the Battle of Leipzig (1813 ). In his journal Art and Archaeology Goethe called it " one of the most wonderful productions that have ever happened ."

In addition to numerous short stories, some dramatic works as well as opera libretti emerged. Mention may be made for a long time authoritative German translation of Mozart's Don Giovanni (1801 ) and the translation of Paer opera Leonora ( 1804), which was also often used for performances of opera.

The Society for Art and Criticism Leipzig eV awards for several years the Friedrich Rochlitz Prize for art criticism. You forgave him in 2010 for the fifth time.
