Johann Georg Meyer

Johann Georg Meyer ( born October 28, 1813 in Bremen, † 4 December 1886 in Berlin), known as Meyer von Bremen, was a major representative of classical German genre painting.

The father of Johann Georg Meyer was a master baker, and his mother was very religious. Meyer graduated in 1833 to study at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, which was directed by Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow, the son of the sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow since 1826. He acquired the necessary craft skills to the sale of his paintings to earn a livelihood, giving him the beginning but did not succeed. On his trips to Brussels and Antwerp Meyer experienced the works of Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck. In 1851 he married the singer Julia Beer.

When his picture at the Berlin exhibition received the Academic Gold Medal Small The prayer of a widow, Meyer moved in August 1852 to Berlin, where he later opened a studio. The sale of his works was getting better; he received in 1838 for the painting mother and child only 19 dollars and 25 dimes, as provided in 1886 his last picture, the favorite in Berlin 25,000 marks.

Johann Georg Meyer von Bremen was especially popular among emigrants to America who wanted to preserve a piece of home in his paintings. His work reflects the message of love, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. 1854 appointed him the King of Prussia as a professor at the Academy of Arts in Berlin.

Approximately 1,000 works Meyer has created from Bremen. When he died in 1886, Meyer was buried in the Schöneberg St. Matthew's Cemetery. 1938/39, his grave site was reburied in connection with the plans of Albert Speer for a north -south axis, along with about 15,000 other tombs on the West Stahnsdorf, where it is still located today.
