Johann Georg Schmidt (engraver)

Johann Georg Schmidt ( born August 23, 1694 Augsburg, † March 15, 1767 in Braunschweig ) was a German engraver.

Life and work

Schmidt was born in Augsburg, and had previously worked in Dresden, before he came to the engraving workshop of the originating also from Augsburg Johann Georg Beck to Brunswick.

After Beck had died in 1722, Schmidt married his widow Anna Elisabeth, born Füllekrug, took over the workshop and the title of Hofkupferstechers. Schmidt made ​​in his workshop the son of Anton August Beck in craftsmanship. Schmidt made ​​as Beck mainly portraits of Brunswick clergy and people of the ducal house to, but the quality of the work lagged behind that of its predecessor, and his son.
