Johann Gottlieb Georgi

Johann Gottlieb Georgi (* December 31, 1729 on Good Wachholz Hagen, Greifenberg county, Pomerania, .. † 27 Oktoberjul / November 8 1802greg in Saint Petersburg ) was a German geographer, chemist and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Georgi ".

Life and work

Georgi was a trained pharmacist and initially had a pharmacy in Stendal. 1769 he moved to St. Petersburg. From there he took part in two expeditions to Siberia. The first ( 1770 ) was under Professor Johann Peter Falck, the second ( from 1772) with Professor Peter Simon Pallas through Siberia: From Irkutsk to Yekaterinburg and back to St. Petersburg. On the expedition a preserved in the ice rhino was found in March 1772, which was sent for further investigation to St. Petersburg. His main work was the driving around and mapping of Lake Baikal. Because of his achievements, he was in 1775 appointed as adjuncts of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 1783 he became professor of chemistry at St. Petersburg and also a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Carl Ludwig Willdenow dahlias named after Johann Gottlieb Georgi as dahlias, the term is, however, now obsolete and very little in use.
