Johann Heinrich Bisterfeld

Johann Heinrich Bisterfeld (* 1605 in Siegen, † February 16, 1655 in White Castle (formerly Karl castle, now Alba Iulia ) in Transylvania, Romania ) was a German Protestant theologian, philosopher, logician and polymath.

Family

Johann Heinrich Bisterfeld was the son of evangelical theologians, philosophers and educators John Bisterfeld, who worked as a pastor and professor of philosophy and eloquence at the Herborn high school since 1591, from 1594 in Siegen, where the principal and superintendent, he also for 1597 became professor of theology, and his wife, the widowed Sophia Kempfer.

Life

Bisterfeld studied Protestant theology from 1619 at the High School Herborn, the " Academia Nassauensis " by Johann Heinrich Alsted, 1624 in Geneva, lions and Oxford. After completing his studies, he became a pastor in Grave in North Brabant, Netherlands.

In 1629 he became professor of philosophy at the High School Herborn, but switched in the same year at the request of Gábor Bethlen, Prince of Transylvania from 1619 to 1626, as professor of theology and philosophy at the Academy, founded by him in White Castle. He was also appointed to the Privy Council.

In addition to his academic activities, he worked as a diplomat and advisor for the Prince George I Rákóczi, prince of Transylvania from 1630 to 1648.

He was married to his first marriage with the daughter Susanne his fellow professors in White Castle Johann Heinrich Alsted; second marriage to Anna, daughter of the Sibiu City Council Johann Stenzel. He was able also to acquire a considerable fortune; in Sibiu he owned a large estate with house, garden and Grange.

Work

Johann Heinrich Bisterfeld had extensive scientific knowledge. This " earned him the dubious honor of being held by the people for a wizard " ( Seivert ). Bisterfeld was initially a fierce opponent of English Puritanism, but turned into a compelling trailer.

He became known through his numerous publications theological and philosophical writings. The two-volume Bisterfeldius redivivus was published posthumously in 1661 in Hague. The theory contained therein universal harmony and a world language have influenced Leibniz sustainable.
