Johann Heinrich Meyer (publisher)

Johann Heinrich Meyer ( born March 2, 1812 in Braunschweig, † November 4, 1863 ibid; actually Henry Meyer ) was a German printer and publisher.

Origin

Heinrich Meyer came from an old book printer family, which had already been active in Lemgo since 1610. His great-great grandfather Heinrich Wilhelm Meyer moved to Brunswick in 1707 and was here in 1716 the printing of Christoph Friedrich taken Zilliger. Henry was the eldest son of Johann Heinrich Meyer (1768-1827) and Dorothea Elisabeth, née Pfeiffer († 1862), daughter of a master glazier.

Life and work

Attending school at the Brunswick Katharineum enthusiastic Heinrich for the sciences, but his father's early death prevented a planned study. Under the guidance of his mother, he entered his father's printing office, a developed high demands on the typography and expanded his knowledge through literature and sightseeing trips to printers, machine shops and libraries in Germany, the Netherlands, France and Denmark. On October 27, 1838 Meyer received on the basis of his writings and performances on typographic area of the philosophical faculty of the University of Jena doctoral degrees.

Because he could not agree on the management team, with his mother, Henry founded around 1838 a font and stereotype foundry and in 1841 with his brother Hermann in the same street as his father's business Buchdruckerei brothers Meyer, which he in 1843 was extended to include an engraving company. 1848 handed over his mother's brothers also his father's business. The title received in 1840 " Hofbuchdruckerei " in 1852 again denied him, probably because of the pressure of democratic writings.

After the death of his brother Hermann on December 8, 1860 Henry led the company under the name of his father continued alone. However, after a long nervous illness he suffered in September 1863 an additional lung and kidney disease, he died on November 4.

Works

At 22, Meyer founded the Journal of the art of printing, foundry and related subjects, which soon became the organ of the entire industry. It appeared from July 1st 1834 a month, twice a month from 1845 and from 1860 a week.

The founded by his father in 1805 Braunschweigische address book, he developed gradually into a state manual on.

Family and succession

Heinrich Meyer married his first marriage on September 27, 1843 Luise Dangers, the daughter of a high bailiff in Jerxheim, and after her death (April 10, 1858), second husband in 1860 the merchant's widow Marie nickel born Mellin, who survived him many years.

The business was carried on only under guardianship, to his eldest son Stephan ( born January 2, 1845) was an adult and took over the business. He expanded the journal for the art of printing again, it occurred on October 1, 1881 but at Ferd. Schlotke in Hamburg and moved in 1892 all the way back from the business. The company " John Heinr. Meyer " was transferred to Henry Kleucker from Hildesheim and changed several times since then the owner.

The printing and publishing company Joh. Meyer still exists today in Brunswick. In addition to the Braunschweiger address the company relocated today mainly literature of regional concern. In addition, brochures and magazines are printed.
