Johann Jakob Bethmann

Johann Jakob Bethmann ( since 1776: von Bethmann ) ( born June 20, 1717 Nassau Mountain, † September 2, 1792 in Bordeaux ) was a German merchant and shipowner.

Life

Johann Jakob Bethmann was one of the sons of the magistrate's Simon Moritz von Bethmann (1687-1725), which were raised after the early death of the father of her maternal uncle Johann Adami in Frankfurt am Main. While the other two brothers Johann Philipp and Simon Moritz 1748, the Bank established there from the inheritance of the uncle Gebrüder Bethmann, Johann Jacob 1740 went to Bordeaux, where he Bethmann & Imbert founded in 1741 ( 1779 Bethmann & fils ) as a trading company and shipping company.

Bethmann married 1745 Bordeaux Protestant Elizabeth Desclaux ( 1725-1785 ). 1749, he became a Swiss citizen in 1758 citizens of Frankfurt am Main. In 1768 he was appointed imperial consul in Bordeaux, where in 1776 the kingdom knighthood.

His daughter Katharina Elisabeth (1753-1813), he was educated in Frankfurt with his childless brother Simon Moritz. There she married in 1769 the merchant Peter Heinrich Metzler ( 1744-1800 ), which henceforth Bethmann - Metzler called himself (later von Bethmann - Metzler or de Bethmann - Metzler ) remained, but as a partner in the banking house in Frankfurt.

Only after Bethmann's death turned his Frankfurt grandson back to Bordeaux. The family is there to this day.

Johann Jakob Bethmann was a friend of the writer Friedrich Melchior Grimm.
