Johann Jakob Dorner the Elder

Johann Jakob Dorner the Elder ( born July 18, 1741 Ehrenstetten im Breisgau, † May 22, 1813 in Munich) was a German painter, etcher and restorer. Johann Jakob Dorner the Younger is his son.

Life and work

Dorner learned 1752 goldsmith and in 1753 with Franz Joseph Roesch painting in Freiburg im Breisgau. 1759, he will be trained by Joseph Bauer in Augsburg for fresco painters. From 1761, he is based in Munich and in 1765 by Elector Max III. appointed court painter. 1766-69 leads him on a study trip to the Netherlands. The return journey took him from Paris and Switzerland. In Munich he is the Electoral Gallery inspector and works as an art teacher. In 1799 he retired from the civil service.

Dorner counts as Ferdinand Kobell to the artists at the Munich court that little master the art of the Netherlands of the 17th century - take up about Gerrit Dou, Frans van Mieris and Godfried Schalken intensively again. His landscapes, genre scenes and portraits excited the next generation of intense.
