Johann Jakob Heckel

Johann Jakob Heckel ( born January 23, 1790 in Mannheim, † March 1, 1857 in Vienna ) was an Austrian zoologist and ichthyologist.

After studying agriculture, he devoted himself to the natural sciences with a focus on botany and ornithology. He is regarded as an outstanding artist and taxidermist. Later, Heckel specializing in ichthyology. He worked closely with the great ichthyologists of his time such as Georges Cuvier, Achille Valenciennes and Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte.

It is known Heckel's work on the cichlid collection of his colleague Johann Natterer, which he has collected on his travels in Brazil.

Heckel died at the age of 67 years to a bacterial infection, which he had probably contracted in the recovery of a Walskelettes.
