Johann Jakob Stehlin

Johann Jakob Stehlin ( born January 20, 1803 in Basel, † December 18, 1879 ) was a Swiss politician. He was 1858-1868 Mayor of Basel and represented to the Canton of Basel-Stadt in the National Council and Council of States.

It was 1858/59 and 1867/68 President of the National Council. In the Swiss army, he reached the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Stehlin, was elected on 11 July 1855 as successor to the late Josef Munzinger, one of the first councils in the Federal Bundesrat, instead of Zürcher's Kasimir Pfyffer, which missed the absolute majority. Stehlin rejected the election but from the next day. Josef Martin Knüsel was for elected on July 14, 1855. Stehlin was the first of five elected federal councils that have knocked out their choice.

The 1852 acquired by Stehlin castle estate in Bipp is still family owned. Two of his sons also gained notoriety: Rudolf Karl Stehlin represented the canton of Basel-Stadt in the Senate, Johann Jakob Stehlin the Younger was a well known architect, who built many buildings in Basel.
