Johann Joachim Schwabe
Johann Joachim Schwabe ( born September 29, 1714 Magdeburg, † August 12 1784 in Leipzig ) was a German scholar, librarian, philosopher and translator.
Schwabe taught in Leipzig and was a member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences.
As an avid pupil Johann Christoph Gottscheds he wore on his advice to Jonathan Swift to German conditions (1734 ).
He gave the amusements of intellect and wit, one of the major critical and belletristic journal of the Enlightenment, out, which appeared from 1741 to 1745.
The book Thorough mythological Lexicon by Benjamin Hederich he gave in 1770 in the second edition out. Even Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Schiller and Heinrich von Kleist drew their mythological knowledge from individual articles were included in Zedler's Universal - Lexicon ( 1732-1754 ).
General history of travel on water and on land
He was also the editor of one of the most extensive and important collections of German travel books of the 18th century, the work of the General History Travel on water and on land [ ... ] that to 1774 in 21 volumes published from 1747 in Leipzig. It was based on the English New general collection of voyages and travels ( 4 volumes, 1745-1747 ) and the French Histoire générale des voyages ( 20 volumes, 1746-1791 ), "but adds that of the British and French editors Thomas Astley and Antoine -François Prévost works selected and translated faithfully than the French edition. " Abbe Prevost had worked from 1746-1759 ( Volume 15 ). Immanuel Kant drew from him some ethnographic knowledge. Currently (Nov. 2012), the 21 volumes of the Library of the University of Heidelberg are digitized in an unusually high quality.
