Johann Karl Wilhelm Vatke

Johann Karl Wilhelm Vatke ( born March 14, 1806 Behnsdorf near Magdeburg, † April 19, 1882 ) was a Protestant theologian and professor of Old Testament religion and philosophy in Berlin.

Wilhelm Vatke studied in Halle, Göttingen and Berlin, and in 1830 professor at the University of Berlin and in 1837 Professor ibid. Vatke was one of the founders of modern biblical criticism of the Old Testament. In the same year (1835 ) as David Friedrich Strauss published his " Life of Jesus ", Vatke published his book The Biblical theology figured out scientifically, which contained similar revolutionary ideas about the Old Testament. The thoughts Vatkes had initially been hardly touched and were then expanded by Abraham Kuenen and Julius Wellhausen on.
