Johann Konrad von Reinach - Hirtzbach ( born August 28, 1657 Michel Bach, Alsace, † March 19, 1737 in Pruntrut ) was from 1705 to 1737 Prince-Bishop of Basel.

Origin

Johann Conrad was born as the son of Hans Diebold Freiherr von Reinach - Hirtzbach († 1702) and Anna Maria Eva by Baroness von Reinach Stone Brunn († 1702). The father was in the service of the Prince Bishop and was last Vogt of Elsgaus.

Training

Johann Konrad studied at the Jesuit Gymnasium in 1673-1678 Pruntrut and philosophy and theology at the Collegium Germanicum in Rome.

Career

Already in 1681 he was Kapitular and 1692, he was ordained a priest. 1704-1705, he held the function of the Dean of the Basel cathedral chapter and 1705 he was elected by the chapter to the bishop.

After Johann Konrad in 1724 injured in a riding accident and disability remained, was his brother Johann Baptist von Reinach - Hirtzbach ( 1669-1734 ) Coadjutor of the prince-bishop with right of succession - but then he died before his brother.

The Prince

Johann Konrad is considered the first absolutist rulers of the Bishopric. He began a centralized public administration reform, which ultimately failed because of the people's resistance, but nevertheless created foundations for a modern administration. Also on the fields of the national economy, transport and coinage he was active. He began in 1716 the construction of the castle Delémont as a second residence and founded the seminary in Pruntrut again.

His entire reign was overshadowed by the confrontations with the population in Südjura about their political participation rights, although he won in 1736 by a decision of the Imperial Court, but could not really settle.
