Johann Leonhard Frisch

Johann Leonhard Frisch ( born March 19, 1666 Sulzbach, † March 21, 1743 in Berlin) was a German voice and naturalist, entomologist and a well-known Berlin engraver.

Life

He was the father of the engraver Johann Helfrich Frisch (1707-1758) and grandfather of the Berlin court painter Johann Christoph Frisch ( 1738-1815 ).

Frisch was a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin and was in the early days of the Academy of their formative members. Natural History Illustrations were an important part of his work, and outside the academy. So he made in the first half of the 18th century a whole series of zoological drawings, especially of birds and fish, especially of their beaks and dentures. These drawings were each explained with an attachment. He became famous by working on two extensive zoological copper plate books to insects and birds in Germany, which, however, his two sons, Jacob Philipp (1702-1753) and Johann Helfrich continued and had only his grandson Johann Christoph was finally able to complete the bird work.
