Johann Christoph Frisch

Johann Christoph Frisch ( born February 9, 1738 in Berlin, † February 28, 1815 ) was a Berlin court painter, draftsman and etcher under Frederick II.

Life

The son of the engraver Ferdinand Helfreich Frisch (1707-1758) and grandson of the speech and natural scientist Johann Leonhard Frisch (1666-1743) was initially taught by his father, was later a pupil of the history painter Christian Bernhard Rode and then formed autodidactically - among other things, by copying the images in the Sanssouci Palace. From 1765 to 1768 he undertook, sponsored by Jean -Baptiste de Boyer, Marquis d' Argens and financially supported by Frederick II, a study trip to Rome, where he was inspired by the works of Raphael, Annibale Carracci and Guido Reni, and in the Provence. Since 1770 Fresh Member, 1786 Rector, Vice- Director in 1801 and since 1805 director of the Berlin Academy of Arts, where he taught "practical painting". He was a renowned portrait and history painter, he was also an art collector. He lived in Heidereutergasse near the Old Synagogue. In his garden before Spandau gate he drew the first mulberry trees.

From him comes from the year 1786 the most widespread uhnd most binding Portrait of the Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. In addition, he made a portrait of the famous Berlin Chasan and community secretary Aaron Beer and more than 30 other portraits of famous personalities. In 1787 he wrote his famous work " Schwerin death at the Battle of Prague on May 6, 1757 ". He created wall and ceiling paintings in the Berlin City Palace (1789 ), the Dutch Palace ( before 1779), the New Palace ( 1768 and 1795 ), in the New Chambers in Sanssouci (1774 ), the Marble Palace (1790 ) and in the Castle peacock Island ( 1796 ).

Freshly graduated finally from the work on two extensive zoological copper plate books to insects and birds in Germany, which his grandfather had once started and continued his father.

Fresh was especially in his later works under the influence of English painting and Classicism. His favorite subjects were mythological and allegorical scenes, historical paintings, motifs from the seals Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and Christoph Martin Wieland.
