Guido Reni

Guido Reni (* November 4, 1575 in Calvenzano; † August 18, 1642 in Bologna ) was an Italian painter and etcher.

Life

Reni was born in Calvenzano, studied in Bologna at Denys Calvaert, but was also influenced by Lodovico Carracci. In 1600 he went to Rome, where he painted in an idealized Raphael -like style, but clearly differed from the greatest masters of his time, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio and Annibale Carracci. He continued his work until 1614 mainly in Rome continued and returned to Bologna, which he later left only twice to work in 1622 in Naples and Rome in 1625. After Rome, he returned to painting commissioned by Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi the great altarpiece of the church of the Santissima Trinità dei Pellegrini with a representation of the Holy Trinity. Reni painted many frescoes, of which the Aurora ( 1613 ) on the ceiling of the central hall of the Casino Rospigliosi Pallavicini (originally: Casino Borghese) in Rome is one of the highest quality; Reni worked on the decoration of this room along with Antonio Tempesta, who painted on the walls of the two narrow sides a triumph of Fama and a triumphal Cupid. During his last years of life tended his religious works to superficiality and sentimentality.
