Johann Leonhard Hug

Johann Leonhard Hug, also pseudonym Thomas Hugson, ( born June 1, 1765 in Konstanz, † March 11, 1846 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a Roman Catholic theologian and orientalist.

Life

Hug, son of a locksmith, attended from 1775 to 1781, first high school in Konstanz, from 1781 to 1783 he studied philosophy at the Lyceum Constance. In 1783 he moved to the study of Catholic theology at the University of Freiburg, 1788/1789, he attended the seminary in Meersburg. In 1789 he was ordained a priest in the cathedral of Constance. In the years 1790/1791 he worked as a priest in Reute at Freiburg.

In 1791 he was appointed to a professorship of Oriental languages ​​and Old Testament in Freiburg. In 1793 he received his doctorate at the Faculty of Theology in Fribourg. From 1793, he held a joint appointment for Old and New Testament. His pupil was Joseph 1814-1815 Eutych Kopp.

1827 Hug became a member of the Freiburg Cathedral Chapter, from 1843 he was Domdekan.

Johann Leonhard Hug is buried in the old graveyard in Freiburg im Breisgau. His tomb was created by the sculptor Josef Alois Freiburg Knittel.

Work

His works are devoted to the study of the origin and formation of the biblical books and their scientific interpretation. They show a critical attitude, but they are still positive apologetic character. One of his writings on the origins of human knowledge that has emerged in 1796, was published by him under the pseudonym Thomas Hugson and is listed in the Index of Forbidden Books.

He was editor of the Journal of the clergy of the archdiocese of Freiburg ( 1828-34 ) and the Journal of Theology ( with Johann Baptist Hirschner, 1839-49 ).
