Johann Martin Bernatz

Johann Martin Bernatz ( born March 22, 1802 in Speyer, † December 19, 1878 ) was a German landscape painter.

Life

The brother of Matthew Bernatz was intended for his father's profession of chimney sweep, but this had to retire after 1826 of pneumonia. As a more efficient draftsman, he then visited with his brother the Polytechnic School in Vienna. Under Joseph Keller Hovens line he learned oil painting in Speyer and went over 1827-29 for architectural painting.

In August 1829 he moved to Munich.

In 1836 he accompanied Gotthilf Heinrich Schubert and Michael Pius Erdl as a painter and draftsman on their journey to the East to Constantinople Opel through Asia Minor, Palestine and the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt.

Then he accompanied John Roth on the East India expedition, where they arrived New Year 1841 in Kolkata.
