Johann Matthias Hase

Johann Matthias Hase, John also Hasius, Haas, Haase ( born January 14, 1684 in Augsburg, † September 24, 1742 in Wittenberg) was a mathematician, astronomer, cartographer and historical geographer.

Life

As the son of a teacher of mathematics learned Hare initially at his birthplace at St. Anne's high school and was thrilled early on by his father for mathematics. He first went in 1701 to the University of Helmstedt, in order to devote himself to mathematics under Rudolf Christian Wagner ( 1671-1741 ), and moved in 1704 to the University of Leipzig, where he focused on Christian Wolff especially with the algebra.

1707 and he became the treatise "Specimen algebrae ad artem fortificatoriam applicatae " the philosophical master's degree. Then he went to Augsburg to be a teacher. However, he was able to keep up with his mathematics education only meager water, so that he already thought of, to devote himself to theology. Soon, however, he returned as tutor two Augsburg patrician returned to Leipzig and could increasingly employed as an adjunct later at the Faculty of Philosophy with geography, astronomy and cartography.

As one of his former teacher Christian Wolff in Halle ( Saale) offered the chair of higher mathematics at the University of Wittenberg, this rejected on 6 May 1715 recommended his former pupil rabbit. In his recommendation, he spoke to the effect that, if he went to Wittenberg, determined hare his position at the University of Halle would occupy and praised his teaching gift for the " useful mathematics ". So that could give thorough instructions for cracks in the civil and military architecture. However, the professor received another. When in 1719 the professorship of mathematics at the University of Wittenberg lower was free, Hare was able to prevail with his application and take up his full professorship on 22 January 1720.

Shortly afterwards, on 27 January 1720, he was adjunct faculty of philosophy. In Wittenberg hare presented as a person who has made the mathematics of life task. His interests made no distinction between higher and lower mathematics, but he estimated a practice-oriented teaching. In the naming of the geography and the hand drawing itself Hase's actual meaning indicates as a cartographer.

He has " started to improve after mathematical and historical reasons under the Germans out the maps". His defense " Sciagraphia integ tractatus de constructione mapparum omnis generis " ( Leipzig, 1717) shows that the " he called stereographic horizontal projection " preference greatest resemblance. In connection with the Nuremberg Homann's Heirs publisher, he created a map of the Earth " Planiglobii terrestris mappa universalis " ( 1746 ). " It contains the Old and the New World, even the Western Australia as Nova Hollandia, with proper longitude and latitude information. ' In addition to this map ," he also published maps of Europe, Africa, and various countries of the earth "and has so in the field of Cartography attained significance.

Rabbit cars chronology and geography to explain the universal history in his works " Regni Davidici et Salomonaei descriptio geographica et historica " (Nuremberg 1739 ), " Phosphorus Historiarum vel Prodromus theatri summorum imperiorum, Leipzig ( 1742) and" Historiae Universalis politicae idea " (Nuremberg 1743 ). To honor his achievements in the historical half, hit him his faculty in 1742 even before the actual Denominandos for the professorship of history before. His writings in this respect he would be equipped with tables and maps. He said that history is such that it can not be clearly explained without geographic representations ( " Tabulae Geographicae " ), and lamented the neglect geographical fundamental doctrines among historians.

In his " Phosphorus " done the presentation of the material, namely the overall condition of the kingdom, as in the drama, which is why in the title of the designation ( historical ) " theater " appears. The classification of the substance into 16 chapters ignored the traditional scheme of the four biblical monarchies. Hare had left aside the controversy over the monarchies already in an academic speech on 30 April 1728 agreed to proceed in this matter " Mathematical Corum more".

His public lectures has hare occasionally extended to the higher mathematics field: on Gnomonik 1723 and mathematical geography in 1732, although that is to be regarded as an " appendix " of astronomy and those listening, the " elementis sphaericis " like Sacroboscos " De sphaera " clear was to be seen. Total included its geographical lectures historical and political geography, both the Holy Roman Empire as well as all parts of the world, geography of modern Germany as well as mathematical and historical geography.

During a prolonged vacancy of the historic chair he offered 1740/41 universal history lectures using chronological charts and geographical maps. As Rector of the University, he worked from 1 May 1728 to the winter semester. To support his astronomical endeavors, he tried to initiate an observatory at the University of Wittenberg; after him the moon crater bunny is named.
