Johann Michael Seligmann

Johann Michael Seligmann (* 1720, † 1762) was a German illustrator and art dealer in Nuremberg. His training as a draftsman and engraver, he was at the Nuremberg Academy of Painting. In 1944 he was called to Rome and from there to St. Petersburg, but later returned to Nuremberg. He was particularly known for his illustrations of scientific works, including the translated as a collection of various foreign and rare birds work A Natural History of Birds by George Edwards and Mark Catesby, drawings of numerous minerals and illustrations to Opera Botanica by Conrad Gesner ( 1754). Many of the made by him plates bear the initials JMS.
