Johann Olearius

John OLEARIUS ( Johann OLEARIUS; * September 17, 1611 in Halle ( Saale), † April 14, 1684 in White Rock ) was a German Protestant theologian and church hymn writers.

Life

John OLEARIUS was the third son of the professor of theology OLEARIUS Johann (1546-1623), who worked since 1581 in Hall as superintendent and high priest, and his wife Sibylla, born Nicander ( 1584-1622 ) was born. His mother died in 1622, his father a year later. The boy first found refuge in the house of the jurist Andreas Sartorius at Halle and after his death at the Meissen and Merseburg court preacher and Superintendent Simon Gedike (1549-1631) in Merseyside.

After attending high school in Halle and Merseburg he participated in the October 19, 1629 on his studies of theology at the University of Wittenberg. On March 20, 1632 of his master's degree in philosophy was conferred here, he qualified as a Master's laying on February 15, 1634 with a theme about geography and was on October 18, 1635 Adjunct Faculty of Philosophy. After OLEARIUS had also engaged in theology, he was taken in the theological faculty of Wittenberg University and earned here on February 22, 1638, the Licentiate in Theology. In the same year OLEARIUS was appointed as superintendent after cross- ford.

From 1643 John OLEARIUS was court preacher of Duke Augustus of Saxe - Weissenfels in Halle. His doctorate in theology took place on November 21, 1643 in Wittenberg. He rose to become court preacher, 1657 Churches and 1664 general superintendent. After the Duke's death, he was transferred in 1680 to Weissenfels, where he died on April 14, 1684 at the age of 72 years.

Work

Johann OLEARIUS was known esp. through his many hymn seals. 1671 appeared the first edition of his book Spiritual Sing Art, which contains 1218 songs. Of these 296 (after cooking ) or 240 ( according to Lueken ) by Johann OLEARIUS. An expanded edition with 1340 pieces followed a year later. Among the seals OLEARIUS ' include the following:

  • Oh, how great is your mercy
  • Surely the Lord was even
  • Blessed be the Lord, set to music by Bach was in the cantata for Trinity Blessed be the Lord, my God, BWV 129
  • Praise God, Sunday is induced
  • Lord Jesus Christ, thy precious blood

To the literary work OLEARIUS ' include devotional works as well as academic texts. Theologically he was close to Philipp Jacob Spener.

Family

OLEARIUS had in the Halle Church Our love women on 5 October 1637 Catharina Elisabeth, the daughter of the theologian Andreas Merck and his wife Elisabeth ( nee Kirchhoff ), is married. From this marriage 15 children have emerged, nine sons and six daughters. Famous on the children is:
